Treatment updates in the management of psychosis

Event Information

The Trent Division are pleased to introduce Professor Saeed Farooq who will deliver a presentation on 'Reviewing and switching antipsychotics with physical health in mind - From research to clinical practice'

People with SMI are at an increased risk of developing physical illnesses, and guidelines recommend the switching of APs to support the physical health of these patients. In this presentation, I will describe research on switching APs, and how the ‘iSWITCHED’ tool can support shared decision-making during switching.

Key learning objectives from this presentation:

1. To understand reviewing and switching as one of the treatment options in improving physical health problems in SMI
2. To understand the risks and benefits of switching APs
3. To understand how to switch APs in routine clinical practice

Professor Saeed Farooq is an NIHR (National Institute of Health and Care Research) Global Research Professor, which is the most prestigious NIHR award. In 2024, Saeed won the Royal College of Psychiatrists Academic Researcher (Mid/Senior Career) award. Saeed has over 250 publications including papers in peer-reviewed high-impact journals and chapters in several books.

He currently leads various studies as principal investigator (PI) on translating evidence for early intervention in psychosis, improving treatment adherence, and optimising treatment for severe mental illness to improve physical health outcomes. He has research grants worth over £10 million as PI and over £5.7 million as co-PI. Saeed has established several translational research studies, including pioneering work in the treatment of depression in Tuberculosis in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and working with traditional healers for early detection and management of psychosis.
